Follow Me Friday- Picture Books
Feature Follow is the day of the week that we get to know each other and make some new friends. This is graciously put on by our hosts Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Each week there is one blog featured by each host and a question to help us break the ice and open discussion. Since I am new to blogging I don't currently have a preference as to how you follow me. Feel free to follow through bloglovin, email, or GFC. I'm not picky just happy to have the company.
This weeks question is:
What were some of your favorite picture books as a kid? If you have kids, what are your favorites to read to them?
When I was a kid I really liked the Curious George books, but my favorite were the Berenstain Bears books. I loved these, and every time we would go to the book store I had to get a new one. My favorites of this series were:
My Wife and I read The Berenstain Bears' New Baby to my son when his sister was on the way this year. He is 3 and really loved the story and read it quite a bit till we had to take it back to the library. He is an amazing big brother to his 4 month old sister.
Having kids I have read a ton of picture books. Goodnight Moon and Guess How Much I love You are books I can recite in my sleep. I tried to read the Berenstain Bears books to my son since I liked them so much, but he really isn't a big fan of them.
My son really likes the Llama Llama series. These books are affectionately know around our house as the Llama Drama series. I have to admit that I really like them too. They are funny, and like most kids books they teach a lesson. My son even has a little plush toy of Llama Llama in his red pajamas. Here are my favorites that I have read:
I love reading to my son. We have read Sherlock Holmes, The Hobbit, and the first Lord of the Rings, but most of the time it is picture books. I know he doesn't understand the books I pick but when he gets older I will re-read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I think when he can understand the story better he will love these like I did as a kid. I also can't wait to read the Harry Potter series to him.

DeleteI haven't heard of any of your picks, but the Llama books look funny. I love The Hobbit and Harry Potter too - I will definitely read these to my future kids.

DeleteI really enjoy Goodnight Moon. The art is wonderful. Art in picture books is what draws me in!
ReplyDeleteI will admit that when it comes to children's books I'm not picky about the art work. Comics on the other hand, the art work can make or break the book. :-)

DeleteI love the Berenstain Bears...No Girls Allowed takes the cake! You are so lucky that you are already reading the Lord of the Rings to your son. How do you get him to stay still for that long without pictures?

When I read Sherlock Holmes and Lord of the rings to my son he was 1 or 2. He was just happy with snuggle time and the sound of my voice. I always did different British voices for the Sherlock Holmes characters and he loved it. Lord of the Ring he was just fascinated by the story. Now at 4 he has to have pictures, but occasionally he asks for "Sherlock Homes". It's cute.
DeleteThe Llama books are vaguely familiar. Sounds like your son is going to be way ahead of the pack when he gets older, already listening to LOTR! He may not fully understand it, but I'm sure bits and pieces are making there way in and preparing him for a future of great books!

He does get bits and pieces. It made my year when after reading to him one night he stomped around our apartment shouting Boom Boom goes the drums in the deep. Not quite the quote but it was so fulfilling that he remembered that part

The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring? Really?
ReplyDeleteYou're such a wonderful father to read those to your son.
I wonder how old he is for him to appreciate those books but if I were you, I'd rather show him the movies first.
For the Harry Potter series, make sure he read the books first before the movies so he might have the imagination on his own.
I read HP & LOTR series as a child.
Night of Snow
My son is going to be 4 in November and when I read them to him he was almost 2. I know he can't really appreciate them now but he loved just listening to them. Some of the parts stuck out to him. I will re-read these to him when he is older.
